FX .30 Boss Review
OK, so the dang gun finally arrived. Was the longest 3 ½ plus weeks of my life. What can I say, I'm and air gun geek who like his toys ! Before I get to far in to this review I want to point out that I am in no way affiliated with any store or company. I pay for my guns out of my pocket, and owe no one a "great" review
Well I just picked the Boss up from Jim and Nancy at http://www.precisionairgunsandsupplies.com/ A quick note about these two. They offer the type of service that only a true brick and mortar store of old can.http://www.airgunsforum.com/picture....&pictureid=385 Not to mention they have a “real” store in Dryden Michigan. If your in the area sometime drop in on them and be prepared to pick your jaw up off the ground. They have a HUGE selection of some of the top guns in our sport/hobby http://www.airgunsforum.com/picture....&pictureid=384 Now back to the Boss. Last weekend south east Michigan was blessed with 50 plus degree temperatures. Sadly along with those perfect plinking temps came 15-20 MPH variable gusts. Guess we cannot have it all.. After a quick site in at 40 yards it was printing nearly one hole groups. So then it was out to 50 with the same results. Moved out to 60 and that’s when the wind started messing things up. Still respectable 1/3 to ½” groups. At 72 yards, the furthest I dared try it, with the gusts, I was able to get with a 5 shot group was 5/8”. Some may say these are pathetic groups for a gun that’s supposed to be shooting sub MOA at 100 yards, and more, but remember, that these gusts had the flags, flying 6 ways to Sunday !, and I am an amateur at best. http://www.airgunsforum.com/picture....&pictureid=386 http://www.airgunsforum.com/picture....&pictureid=389 http://www.airgunsforum.com/picture....&pictureid=388 http://www.airgunsforum.com/picture....&pictureid=387 Now today I took another trip up to visit the Precision Air Guns to make use of their fine outdoor range. This screwy December weather provided us with more winds, though a bit more consistent, but with a terrible fog. Visibility was 100 yards so shooting was kept to 75. I invited Jim to shoot the Boss, he had not had a chance yet since mine was the first to come out of his shop. Let me tell you I consider him to be one of the finest shots I know. He sat down with an unknown gun, with a scope dial for me, and proceeded to drop 5 of the 46.3 grain FX pellets in to a group that could easily be covered by a dime. Not sure about you but it impressed the heck out of me. Now it was my turn and after a few sighter's at 75 my best 5 shot group was ½” , If not for one flyer that 75 yard group would have been .262. While on the range I also had some time to do some chronograph testing. Here are the results. Gun: .30 cal FX Boss Pellet: un-weighted and non sorted FX 46.30 grain Weather: 49 deg, misty and heavy fox Fill Pressure: 220 Bar, 3190 PSI Ending Pressure 1900 PSI Shot/FPS 1. 887 2. 873 3. 873 4. 881 5. 876 6. 877 7. 874 8. 879 9. 876 10. 882 11. 877 12. 877 13. 875 14. 874 15. 880 16. 888 17. 883 18. 885 19. 879 20. 873 21. 874 22. 879 23. 876 24. 872 25. 873 26. 862 27. 855 28. 862 29. 849 Low FPS 849 FPS High FPS 888 FPS Ave FPS 875 FPS Spread 39 FPS Peak power 81.1 FPE Average Power 875 FPE Now these numbers may be confusing to some, as it has been said that 40-45 shots per fill to be expected. That may be so but not from this gun. You may be saying that on another site they used a 245 bar fill to achieve this so why didn’t I try it. Well I did try a string at 240 bar but the string has some wild strings going from 880-840-870-840-880 fps. Not the type of thing I would have expected from a regulated, very expensive gun. Bottom line is my gun is good for 25 shots, if you go by te 2% spread rule. Since the clip holds 9, which is a nice touch, I just run it for 3 clips and refill. That’s plenty for a day in the field, and about enough for a bench rest shoot. I did do some testing with the heavier Daystate Emperor 50.1 grain pellets. The results were as follows. Fill Pressure 220 Bar, 3190 PSI 1. 831 2. 836 3. 838 4. 839 5. 836 6. 838 7. 836 8. 838 9. 835 10. 829 Average FPS 836 Average FPE 77.7 I did some quick 72 yard testing on the really windy day and the best I could muster was a 9 shot 1” group OK well its nearly 2 am and I need some rest. I will add some pictures and have a bit more to report later. Thanks for reading Grumpy . |
You get some of the best toys! +1 to Jim and Nancy. They will be getting more of my business in the future.

I am still working with the Boss to get some things sorted out. For one I really dislike the "new" match grade trigger. It feels gritty almost as if its got sand in there. Also I want to mention that pellets clipped the shroud on this gun right out of the box ( ironically so did my FX500 Royal ). Very disheartening for a gun in this price range.
Even with its issues I have come to like the boss. Its a very easy gun to shoot. |
Awesome post. Your write up among others is what convinced me that I really needed to add a "Boss" to the collection.
Mine arrived a few days ago from AOA. I was out of town at the time and my wife had the box waiting for me when I got home. Very excited I opened the brown cardboard shipping box and was surprised to find inside a plastic gun case, not an original box from FX. The plastic gun case is a tad small for the rifle and was bulged out on one side where the end of the barrel was pushing it out. The rifle, owners manual, small AOA checklist stating they inspected and tested the rifle and a single magazine were inside the case. The gun has a walnut stock while lovely dosen't stand up to the wood on my FX Tarantula. The new scope purchased to go on this gun (Hawke Sidewinder 30 6x24x56) hasn't arrived yet so it sits waiting to get shot over the chronograph. I couldn't stand the suspense tho and had to go put a few rounds thru it to see what its report was like. I"m happy to say that to my ear its no louder than my Gladiator or Matador .25's. I'll get some pictures taken and repost when I the glass shows up and I get some strings over the skyscreens. |
